Scent Identification Line-ups Using Trained Dogs in the Netherlands
نویسنده
چکیده
Scent identification line-ups have been in use as a forensic tool in a number of European countries since the beginning of this century. The basic idea of identifications by dogs is generally the same in these countries: a trained dog matches the scent collected at a crime scene to the scent of a person suspected of this crime. However, there are also some marked differences between countries, particulary in respect to method and experimental set-up. This presentation will focus on the way the identifications are performed in the Netherlands. In the past few years some scientific work has been done addressing some of the “hot points”. The most important results will be presented, and their consequences for the way in which the line-ups are performed now will be shown. Time permitting, a video of a Dutch scent identification line-up will serve as illustration.

Dogs Discriminate Identical Twins
Earlier studies have shown variation among experimental attempts to establish whether human monozygotic twins that are genetically identical also have identical individual scents. In none of the cases were the dogs able to distinguish all the individual scents of monozygotic twins living in the same environment if the scents were presented to them separately. Ten specially trained police German...

Traditionally, dogs contributed to police work by stalking a suspect’s track. During the latter part of the twentieth century, investigators found a new way to employ the canine’s olfactory skills: perform a scent lineup to connect a person with a crime via scent evidence. Dogs trained for scent identification are “specialist, biological devices,” according to Tomasz Bednarek, the Head of the W...
متن کاملRigorous Training of Dogs Leads to High Accuracy in Human Scent Matching-To-Sample Performance
Human scent identification is based on a matching-to-sample task in which trained dogs are required to compare a scent sample collected from an object found at a crime scene to that of a suspect. Based on dogs' greater olfactory ability to detect and process odours, this method has been used in forensic investigations to identify the odour of a suspect at a crime scene. The excellent reliabilit...
متن کاملDiagnostic accuracy of canine scent detection in early- and late-stage lung and breast cancers.
BACKGROUND Lung and breast cancers are leading causes of cancer death worldwide. Prior exploratory work has shown that patterns of biochemical markers have been found in the exhaled breath of patients with lung and breast cancers that are distinguishable from those of controls. However, chemical analysis of exhaled breath has not shown suitability for individual clinical diagnosis. METHODS Th...
متن کاملOlfaction-based Detection Distance: A Quantitative Analysis of How Far Away Dogs Recognize Tortoise Odor and Follow It to Source
The use of detector dogs has been demonstrated to be effective and safe for finding Mojave desert tortoises and provides certain advantages over humans in field surveys. Unlike humans who rely on visual cues for target identification, dogs use primarily olfactory cues and can therefore locate targets that are not visually obvious. One of the key benefits of surveying with dogs is their efficien...
